Botox at Cronin Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a cosmetic treatment that works by temporarily reducing the underlying muscle activity under the skin’s surface to treat Rhytids (wrinkles / deep-set lines), helping those lines look less visibly, sooner.

Dr. Cronin has spent years working with Allergan, the makers of Botox, ensuring that her patients receive the highest quality products with the best possible results.

How Botox Works

Wrinkles may start to appear based on a combination of factors, such as changes in cellular structure, loss of collagen, as well as the damage caused by the sun and other environmental factors over time. Additionally, wrinkles may also form due to common facial movements.

For instance, when you concentrate, squint, or frown, your muscles contract, causing the skin to fold and create wrinkles. By temporarily blocking the signals that nerves send to muscles, Botox prevents muscles from contracting, allowing them to relax and no longer cause wrinkles.

Botox Treatments

For the Forehead: These lines and wrinkles form horizontal lines when you look surprised. To treat this area, Botox is injected into different regions of the frontalis muscle. This is the muscle that allows you to raise your eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead.

For the Frown Lines: These lines and wrinkles form vertical lines when you frown. To treat this area, Botox is injected into regions in the Procerus muscle and the Corrugator muscles. These are the muscles that form the lines between and on top of the eyebrows.

For the Crow’s Feet: These lines and wrinkles form when smiling, laughing and squinting. To treat this area, Botox is injected into three regions of the orbicularis oculi muscle. This is the muscle that frames the areas surrounding the eyes.

In addition to reducing wrinkles, Botox has the ability to lift. By injecting the groups of muscles that pull the skin up and the others that pull the skin down, a “lifting” effect is created which tightens the skin.

Botox is also used for the treatment of other conditions, including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
